08/05/08 - They are working on removing the rock from US 34. So Route 34 can get back to normal traffic.

07/31/08 - With the river at 10.72 Just a little bit of US 34 is still under water. Maybe this weekend they might remove the rock and return 34 to it's normal state.
07/22/08 - With the rising river and recent rains, the water has not dropped in the flooded area. But Route 34 continues to stay open with traffic moving across the river.
07/21/08 - The Iowa State Bar Association has produced a booklet that will be of much use to all affected by the flood. Most of the document deals with federal aid. I have placed it on the flood related documents page.
7/21/08 - Henderson County Supervisor, Marty Lafary, says the Illinois Department of Transportation has began debris removal in areas affected by the flooding with sixteen dump trucks .
07/19/08 - Route 34 to Burlington is open but moving slowly. Not because of road conditions, but because of the gawkers. I watched hundreds of cars come through from Iowa and then turn around at Indian Point. Then return back to Iowa. I would bet the same number of cars from Illinois are doing the same. Illinois DOT did a very nice job on the road.
07/18/08 US 34 is OPEN!!!!!! I drove to Burlington at 6:45 PM Just a little over a tenth of a mile is one way.
07/18/08 - TV station KWQC is reporting that US 34 will open tonight as a one way road at 6:30!!!!!!!!!!!
07/18/08 - Illinois DOT operations engineer Shane Larson is hopeful the road will be open Saturday morning. "This morning when we measured, the water only dropped about a half-inch so we're down to about 14 and a half inches". "At that point we made a decision, and our crews are now working to set a barrier wall and start hauling rock." Larson does not expect any weight restrictions, but the speed limit will be reduced to 35 mph and the traffic will be one way controlled by lights, alternating East then West.
"Carman Road could be closed for quite awhile," Larson said. "There's still, I don't know exactly, but a lot of water for quite a distance. We've kind of been more focused on 34."
07/14/08 - Water is dropping on US 34. Today, because of medical necessity, an ambulance went down 34 and across the Great River Bridge. A truck escorted it down the road.
07/13/08 - The county has brought in ten big pumps to remove the flood waters. They will soon have to plug the holes in the levee as the water behind the levee drops below river level.
07/10/08 - State Treasurer's Office will have a representative at the Elementary School July 22nd from 6 till 8PM. Discussions will be about state loans for those who have suffered from the flood damage. Also FEMA, SBA, USDA, and the Illinois Department of Human Resources are expect to be there. 07/10/08 - Shane Larson said the deepest water level over U.S. 34 remained right around 2 feet Wednesday afternoon. But with the Mississippi River rising it my slow down the draining process.
07/09/08 - After cutting several holes in the levee, Illinois DOT District 4 operations engineer Shane Larson said if the water continues to drop from the road at the same rate it has been, he expects the road could open by early next week.
07/08/08 - FEMA will be at the Gladstone health department Wed-Thur-Fri-Sat (July 9th to the 12th).
07/08/08 - I stood on top of the Ellison Creek Bridge looking out toward US 34. It does not look like the water has fallen very much from last week. Appears to be 4 to 5 foot of water on US 34 in spots.
07/07/08 - Salvation Army has flood kits for clean up
in Gladstone at the VFW from 9 am to 5 pm.
07/05/08 - Illinois DOT says they will inspect US 34 next week if the water is off by then.
07/05/08 - From the Iowa DOT - US 34 bridge crossing the Mississippi River going into Illinois is closed to traffic due to levee break in Illinois. There is no anticipated opening date at this time. The Mississippi river bridge in Ft. Madison, Iowa and the Mississippi river bridge in Keokuk, Iowa are open at this time.
07/01/08 - The local newspaper, The Hawkeye, now reports that the opening of the Great River Bridge is on hold (see 06/25/08).
07/01/08 - Pat Holtkamp has a big selection of donated items for flood victims at Holtkamp Trailers located in the old Niehaus Motors at the junction of highway 34 and Mt. Pleasant Street in West Burlington.
07/01/08 - The Church of Christ in Burlington has received a truck load of supplies from the Churches of Christ Disaster Relief in Nashville, TN. These supplies are available for flood victims. The items include clothing Food, Personal Hygiene, Baby Care, Cleaning Supplies and other items. The building is open 9 am to 12 Noon and 3 pm to 6 pm. AT 2120 S. 06/27/08 - There are three sites where people can gather information about what sort of assistance is available to them. Open seven days a week from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., the closest location is the Huff Athletic Center on the Monmouth College campus

06/26/08 - Church of Christ on S. Roosevelt Ave Burlington has items for flood victims from Monday Thru Thursdays 9 am to 1 pm.
06/26/08 - SBA Disaster Loan Program applications available at SCC.
06/26/08 - Disaster Area Applications for Reassessment of Taxable real property that was substantially damaged by flooding available at the Henderson County Assessor`s Office.
06/26/08 - Henderson County Flood Relief taking applications for small monetary grants on Monday, June 30 at the Health Dept. in Gladstone from 9-11 and 1-3. Bring proof of name and address.
06/26/08 - Illinois State officials say President Bush has approved direct federal assistance for Mercer, Henderson and Hancock counties. FEMA will open its telephone number to these counties starting on Thursday. (1-800-621-FEMA)
06/26/08 - Salvation Army is offering one-time aid to those Illinois families who have been flooded out of their homes. To make an application, come to the Henderson County Health Department between 8 AM to Noon and 1 PM to 4 PM weekdays thru July 11th (except July 4th). Bring your drivers license and social security numbers. For additional information, call 309-627-9744.
06/25/08 - I was down at Carman looking at the Carman Blacktop. You can now see the about half the road as it rises and falls. Should be able to see the whole road by tomorrow.
06/25/08 - The Local paper The Hawkeye is reporting the bridge may be open by the 4th of July. If no damage to the road has occurred.
06/25/08 - DHS will be in the following area to service people for food stamps June 24-June 27: 9am to 11 am at the Lomax Nazarene Church in Lomax, 12:30 pm to 2 pm at the Henderson County Health Department in Gladstone 2:45 pm to 4:15 pm at the Oquawka Methodist Church in Oquawka.
06/25/08 - Henderson County Flood Relief is accepting money donations at First State Bank of Biggsville.
06/25/08 - Free tetanus shots will be available at the Henderson County Health Department Monday, June 23 to Friday, June 27 from 8 am to 4 pm. Info: 309-627-2812
06/25/08 - Henderson County Sheriff advises that all permits and passes for the flood zone are suspended until further notice due to health and safety concerns. No one is allowed in the flood zones. Also no one is to be on the levee in Oquawka. Curfew in flooded areas from 6 pm to 8 am. Violators will be arrested.
06/25/08 - FEMA is warning flood victims about scam artists. Especially those coming to your door offering to repair but wanting advance payment. Do not give personal information such as FEMA registration number or Social Security card to strangers. Be wary of anyone offering to speed up insurance payments or building permits.
06/25/08 - If you would like to donate for flood relief. Items most needed at the Henderson County Health Dept. are: cleaning supplies, paper products, trash bags and mosquito repellent. Donations can be dropped off at the Henderson County Health Dept. in Gladstone. If you would like to donate food or clothing call 309-627-2812 to see what is needed.
06/25/08 - Henderson County Health Department providing food and shelter to workers and families. Food is being provided by area churches, organizations and individuals. The shelter is at the Henderson County Health Dept., 208 West Elm Street in Gladstone. 06/25/08 - IL 96 between Niota and Dallas City is now open.
06/24/08 - CMD post says they are working on reopening route 96 between Dallas City and Niota
06/24/08 - 164 between Gladstone and Oquawka is now open.
06/24/08 - Illinois state DOT and engineers are assessing US34 today. They will then have a better idea on when US 34 will open.

06/24/08 - A State Flood Recovery Assistance Hotline has been established to link people affected by floods to state assistance programs. The hotline will operate daily from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. To access the toll-free hotline, individuals should call 1-866-848-2067 (1-866-214-4479 TTY).
06/24/08 - There will be an informational meeting on flood relief on Thursday, June 26th 6:00 pm in the West Central High School Gym in Biggsville. Flood victims should attend.

06/17/08 - The Red Cross has moved the emergency shelter to West Central Elementary School.
06/17/08 - Noon The railroad tracks failed and water is now expected to march across the entire basin.
06/17/08 - At 6:03 AM the Henderson 2 levee failed at Carthage Lake pump house. Route 34 is closed. But they expect the raised railroad tracks to protect Gulfport and areas north.
06/16/08 - IDOT told me they have plans to gravel route 34, 4 foot high if needed to keep route 34 open. But only if needed.
06/16/08 - Henderson County Residents Only--American Red Cross Shelter at West Central School`s North Campus in Biggsville is CLOSED. Another shelter has been set up in Gladstone at the Henderson County Health Department at 208 W. Elm St. The Red Cross will provide food and cots. Please bring your own bedding.
06/15/08 - Gulfport and low lying area of Gladstone Township are under a mandatory evacuation order. You must leave the area.
06/15/08 - Hwy 164 is closed between Oquawka and Gladstone.
06/15/08 - Gladstone mayor requesting immediate help sandbagging. Meet at Sebastians.
06/15/08 - 10:00 PM Talked to the Sheriff Department. They said it was a rumor that the Great River Bridge was going to close Monday. I repeat Route 34 is not closing unless it has to.
06/15/08 - Henderson County Sheriff advises all citizens living in the low lying areas near the Mississippi River around Oquawka, Gladstone, Gulfport, Carman, and Lomax to make preparations to move in the event of an evacuation. Questions call the Sheriff`s Office 309-867-4291.
